Summer League: Finals

Hi folks

A great night of bowls to complete an excellent summer league season.

Congratulations to Westbury Lancasters – Beryl Watts, Graham Orr, Geoff Orr and Graham Gayther – for a convincing display, not only last night but throughout the season, losing just 5 of the 26 games they played in topping division ‘B’ and winning the final.

The mats at Kingsway have changed to the county mats and many of us struggled to get to grips with the pace early on. All 4 mats were used, 2 for the semi finals and 2 for the finals, so there was no advantage to anyone. Chris Evans was our umpire for the evening but had very little to do, apart from reminding players to keep their hands off the bowls when wiping chalk off!!

The draw for the semi’s had Kingsway Swans, who had qualified through the eliminators and play off rounds, up against division ‘A’ winners, Yorkley Kestrels.

The other game was between the 2 Westbury teams, so they were guaranteed one team in the final.

Kingsway got off to a good start and were 5-0 up after 2 ends, and although Yorkley kept getting close they were finally on the losing end 13-9

The Lancasters started with a 4 on end one which proved decisive. They managed to hold a 2 or 3 shot gap through the match beating the Hurricanes 9-6

The final and 3rd place play off both proved one side affairs unfortunately. Yorkley made a change, dropping their skip (me) in favour of Mary Lawrence. Julian Kellett put on a display of sheer class as skip, which proved to much for the Hurricanes as they had a comfortable 12-6 win

The final was a Westbury Lancasters master class, with Kingsway just picking up 3 singles, final score was 16-3.

A big thank you to Phil Jennings and his team of helpers at Kingsway for hosting all 3 finals nights, Kingsway is destined to be a great new home for the county I think.

Also a personal thank you to all who took part this season, it was great fun organising the league.
